How Much Do Dress Alterations Cost in Singapore? (2026 Guide)

19 July 2026· Stitch & Steam· 6 min read

Dress alteration prices in Singapore 2026 — hemming, taking in, straps, lining and gown work, what makes a dress cost more, and when altering is worth it.

Dress alterations in Singapore cost between S$15.80 and S$58.80 for most work — strap and neckline adjustments at the lower end, full hemming at the top — with wedding gowns quoted individually after a fitting. That is the short answer. The useful answer is knowing why a dress costs what it does, so you can read any quote — ours included — and know it is fair.

This guide covers every common dress alteration, what moves the price up or down, and when altering is genuinely worth it. For prices across all garment types, see our full clothes alteration cost guide.

Why Does Hemming a Dress Cost More Than Hemming Pants?

It surprises people that dress hemming (S$48.80–58.80) costs more than triple a pants hem. The reason is arithmetic, not markup:

  • Circumference. A trouser leg hem is perhaps 40 cm around. A flared midi dress hem can run 3–4 metres — and every centimetre is measured, pressed and sewn.
  • Layers. Lined and layered dresses are hemmed layer by layer, each falling to a slightly different length so the drape stays clean.
  • Curves. Many dress hems are curved or bias-cut, which means the fabric wants to stretch and ripple as it is sewn. Keeping a bias hem dead level is slow, skilled work.
  • The fall. A dress hem is judged on the body, not the table — it has to sit level all the way around you, which is why we hem after a proper fitting, never off a measurement sent by text.

A straight, unlined shift at the bottom of the range; a three-layer chiffon at the top.

Taking In or Letting Out a Dress

The S$18.80–48.80 range for waist and bust work is wide because dresses hide their complexity on the inside:

  • Simple — an unlined dress with side seams and no zip in the way: lower end.
  • Moderate — lined, or the adjustment runs through darts that need re-shaping: middle.
  • Complex — an invisible zip that must be unpicked and reset, boning, or taking in through the bust where the shape is built in: upper end.

Letting out has one extra honest caveat: it depends entirely on the seam allowance the maker left inside. Most dresses allow 1–5 cm. We check at the fitting and tell you what is possible before quoting — the same applies to skirts and jumpsuits.

Wedding Gowns & Evening Wear

Gown work starts from S$38.80 per adjustment and is always quoted individually, because no two gowns are built alike — layers, boning, beading, and trains all change the work involved. A typical bridal job combines a hem, a bodice adjustment, and sometimes a bustle, across one or two fittings.

Two pieces of practical advice from the studio:

  • Book early. Gowns need more lead time than everyday dresses — allow a few weeks before the day, more during wedding season.
  • Clean it after, not before. Alteration first, then dry cleaning — gown cleaning starts from S$68.80 and is best done once the fit is final.

What Makes Any Dress Alteration Cost More

Across every job above, the same five factors move a quote toward the top of its range:

  • Lining — everything is done twice
  • Layers — everything is done per layer
  • Delicate fabric — chiffon, satin and silk demand slower, finer handling
  • Embellishment — beading, lace and sequins along a seam must be removed and reattached by hand
  • Structure — boning, built-in cups, and invisible zips add steps

None of this is padding; it is simply where the hours go. A good seamstress will walk you through exactly which of these applies to your dress — if you are choosing who to trust, our guide on seamstress vs tailor explains what to look for.

Need It Fast?

Standard turnaround is about 2 weeks after your fitting. If the event is closer than that, express dress alterations are available — within 5 days (1.5x), 3 days (2x), or 24 hours (2.5x) — subject to an available slot, so confirm before booking.

Is It Worth Altering?

The rule we give customers: if the dress fits at the shoulders and hips, it is almost always worth altering — length, waist, straps and shape are all fixable. A S$30 dress that fits perfectly after a S$18.80 adjustment beats a S$100 dress that almost fits, every time. Fit is what reads as expensive.

The honest exception: when the work would cost more than the dress and the fabric does not justify it. We will tell you that at the fitting — and you are free to walk away with the dress exactly as you brought it.

See the full details of what we can do on our dress alterations service page, or book an appointment — bring the dress, and you will have a firm price before a single stitch goes in.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to hem a dress in Singapore?

Dress hemming typically costs S$48.80 to S$58.80 in Singapore. It is priced higher than pants hemming because a dress hem is several times longer in circumference, often lined or layered, and frequently curved — every layer is hemmed separately and the drape has to fall evenly all the way around.

How much does it cost to take in a dress?

Taking in a dress at the waist or bust costs around S$18.80 to S$48.80, depending on the construction. A simple unlined shift is at the lower end; a dress with lining, darts, boning, or an invisible zip that has to be reset sits at the higher end. The exact price is confirmed at the fitting before any work begins.

How much do wedding dress alterations cost in Singapore?

Wedding gown alterations start from S$38.80 per adjustment at Stitch & Steam and are quoted individually after a fitting, since every gown differs in layers, boning and embellishment. Budget for one to two fittings and more lead time than everyday garments — and book at least a few weeks before the day.

Is it worth altering a cheap dress?

Often yes. If a S$30 dress fits perfectly after a S$18.80 adjustment, it will outperform a S$100 dress that almost fits — fit is what makes clothing look expensive. The honest exception is when the alteration costs more than the dress and the fabric is not worth the work; we will tell you so at the fitting rather than take the job.

How long do dress alterations take?

Standard turnaround is about 2 weeks from fitting to collection. Express options are available — within 5 days at 1.5x, 3 days at 2x, or 24 hours at 2.5x the standard rate — subject to availability, so confirm an express slot before booking. Gowns and heavily layered pieces may need longer.
