A jacket that fits at the shoulders and nowhere else is not actually your size — it is just the closest size on the rack. Off-the-rack suits are cut for an average chest-to-shoulder ratio that fits almost nobody exactly, which is why the sleeves always sit half an inch too long or the body hangs boxy through the waist. The good news: almost everything about a jacket's fit is a straightforward, well-priced alteration. The one exception is worth knowing before you buy, not after.

Structured garments cost more to alter than casual wear at every tailor in Singapore, ours included — a blazer is built in layers (outer shell, canvas, lining), and each one is opened and closed separately rather than run through as a single seam. For the trousers half of a suit, pricing is the same as our regular pants alterations.

A jacket quote should tell you what the fabric and construction allow, not just what you asked for. If a shoulder adjustment is priced the same as a sleeve hem, that is worth a second opinion.

Sleeve Shortening: The Most Requested Fix

Sleeve length is the single most visible thing about how a jacket fits — too long and it swallows the hand, too short and it looks outgrown. The rule of thumb is a quarter to half an inch of shirt cuff showing beyond the jacket sleeve, and it is the alteration most worth getting exactly right.

There are two ways to shorten a sleeve, and which one applies changes the price:

• From the cuff — the standard method. The sleeve is opened at the hem, shortened, and re-finished. Straightforward on most jackets.
• From the shoulder — used when the sleeve has working buttonholes (a "surgeon's cuff") that need to stay exactly where they are at the wrist. This means opening the sleeve at the shoulder seam instead, which is more involved and sits at the top of the S$48.80–58.80 range.

Either way, this is a job worth doing properly — a sleeve shortened unevenly, or one that throws off the drape at the shoulder, is more noticeable than a sleeve left slightly too long.

Body Tapering: Waist & Chest Suppression

The second most common fix is tapering the body — taking in the side seams so the jacket follows your actual shape instead of hanging in a straight box from the shoulders down. It is what turns an off-the-rack blazer from "the right size" into "fitted."

This costs more than sleeve work (S$55.80–68.80) because it touches more of the garment at once. A lined, canvassed jacket is taken in through the shell, the canvas and the lining simultaneously, and the lapel roll and pocket placement have to stay exactly where they were — the reshaping has to look like it was always cut that way, not like fabric has been pinched in afterward.

How much can be taken in? Most jackets allow a clean, well-proportioned taper of one size, sometimes more depending on the seam allowance left inside. We assess this at the fitting — pinning the jacket on your body rather than guessing from measurements — before quoting.

Shoulders: The One We Often Say No To

Every other jacket alteration is a refinement. Shoulder work is reconstruction. The sleeve head has to be unpicked, the canvas underneath reshaped or replaced, and everything rebuilt so the lapel still rolls correctly and the sleeve still hangs true — it is not a seam adjustment, it is closer to rebuilding part of the jacket.

That is why it is the one line item on this page without a fixed range. We quote it individually after inspecting the construction, and honestly, the more common answer is: buy a different jacket. If the shoulder seam sits noticeably past your own shoulder, or the fabric bunches or pulls when you raise your arm, that is the shoulder telling you it is the wrong size — and no amount of tapering elsewhere will fix it.

This is also why shoulder fit belongs at the fitting room, not the tailor's counter. Everything else on this page is fixable after the fact. Shoulders are the one thing worth getting right before you buy.

Suit Trousers: Priced Like Regular Pants

The trousers half of a suit is not priced differently from any other pair of pants — hemming runs S$15.80 to S$40.80, tapering S$16.80 to S$38.80, and waist adjustments S$15.80 to S$36.80, the same rates as our pants alterations page. If you are bringing in a full suit, it is worth having both pieces fitted in the same appointment so the jacket length and trouser break read as one coordinated outfit rather than two separately altered pieces.

Buy for the Shoulders, Alter the Rest

If you are shopping for a new suit or blazer with alterations in mind, this is the whole strategy in one line: the shoulder is the one area that is difficult and costly to change, so it is the one dimension to get right off the rack. Everything else — sleeve length, chest and waist suppression, trouser length and taper — is routine, well-priced work. A jacket that fits at the shoulders and is loose everywhere else is a good buy. A jacket that is snug at the shoulders and loose everywhere else is a mistake, however good the fabric.
