A broken zip is the smallest fault that makes a garment completely unwearable. The fabric is fine, the fit is fine — but the dress will not close, the jeans will not stay up, and the jacket hangs open. It is also, fortunately, one of the cheapest things a tailor can fix.

First: Repair or Replace?

Not every broken zip needs a new zip. The right fix depends on which part failed:

The slider is the moving part, and it wears out long before the teeth do. If the teeth are intact, you probably do not need a new zip — which is why we assess before we quote, rather than defaulting to the bigger job. Why the Range: What Drives the Price

The zip type. A standard exposed zip on jeans is stitched through a sturdy fly — straightforward. An invisible zip lives inside the seam of a dress, so replacing it means opening the seam and resetting it so the zip disappears again. Two-way and separating zips on jackets have to be matched in length and gauge, or the garment never closes properly again.

The construction around it. Lining is the quiet cost multiplier. A lined dress or padded jacket means every layer is opened, worked and closed separately. A waistband anchored over the top of a zip has to be partially unpicked and rebuilt.

The matching. A replacement zip should be invisible in the finished garment — colour matched to the fabric, length matched to the opening, and the same style of pull where possible. We stock quality zips, including YKK, and match rather than approximate.

The Zips You Will Meet

• Standard (exposed) zip — jeans, pants, bags, skirts. The workhorse. Cheapest to replace.
• Invisible zip — dresses, skirts, some tops. Hidden inside the seam with only the pull showing. The most common failure we see on womenswear, because the fine coil takes strain every time the garment is put on.
• Separating zip — jackets and hoodies, opens fully at the bottom. Must be matched in length exactly.
• Two-way zip — coats and gowns, opens from both ends. The most involved replacement, and always quoted individually.

When We Will Tell You Not to Bother

Honesty is cheaper than a repair you regret. We will say no, or at least pause, when:

• The fabric around the zip is failing — replacing a zip in torn or perished fabric just moves the failure point.
• The zip is fused into a bonded or waterproof seam — some technical outerwear is built not to be opened; a repair can compromise the garment.
• The garment is not worth the job — rare, because zip work is inexpensive, but if the piece is failing in three other places we will tell you before taking your money.

Everything else — jeans, dresses, skirts, jackets, uniforms, bags — is routine work. A broken zip on a school uniform mid-term, or on your one good pair of jeans, is exactly the kind of fix that should not wait.
