Jeans Repair in Singapore: Patching, Crotch Blowouts & Hem Fixes

12 October 2026· Stitch & Steam· 6 min read

Jeans repair in Singapore: patching holes and tears, crotch blowout repair from S$30.80, hem fixes, and when denim is worth saving. By appointment in Canberra.

Jeans rarely fail all at once. The denim thins at the inner thigh, a small hole opens at the knee, the hem frays where it drags on the floor. Most pairs are retired long before the fabric is actually finished, and many of them only needed one repair to keep going.

This guide covers the repairs we see most often on jeans: holes and tears, crotch blowouts and hem fixes. It explains what each one involves, what it costs at Stitch & Steam, and when a pair is not worth saving.

What Jeans Repair Costs

RepairPrice
Holes, small tears, burst seamsfrom S$5.80
Crotch repair and reinforcementfrom S$30.80
Hemming (standard)S$15.80 – 18.80
Hemming (original hem preserved)S$26.80 – 30.80
Zip replacementS$5.80 – 20.80
Large patches, heavily worn areasquoted after assessment

The size of the damage, the denim weight and where the repair sits all affect the final price. Your exact price is confirmed in person before any work begins.

If the jeans need fit work as well, do it in the same visit. A pair that is being repaired at the crotch and tapered through the leg comes back finished in one trip, and the repair can be planned around the new seam line. Our full alterations price list covers everything else.

Holes and Tears: Patching Explained

A hole in denim is rarely just a hole. The fibres around it are usually worn thin too, so a repair that only closes the gap tends to split again just beside it. Good patching supports the weak area as well as the hole.

Patching from the inside. A piece of denim, matched as closely as practical in colour and weight, is placed behind the damaged area. The hole and the thin fabric around it are then stitched densely through both layers. This is the most common repair for knees and thighs, and the most discreet.

Closing a clean tear. A tear along a straight line, from a nail or a door handle, can sometimes be closed and reinforced without a full patch if the surrounding denim is still strong.

Visible patches. Some people want the patch on the outside, as a deliberate feature. That is a design choice rather than a repair, and we will talk it through with you at the fitting.

A repair can be made discreet. It cannot always be made invisible, especially on faded denim, and we will tell you which one to expect before we start.

Crotch Blowouts

The crotch is where jeans fail most. Four seams meet there, and the inner thighs rub against each other with every step. The result is either a split along the seam or, more often, denim that has worn so thin it finally gives way.

  • A seam split is the simpler case. The seam is re-sewn and reinforced so it holds under the same strain.
  • Worn-through denim needs more. The area is backed with denim and stitched densely across the whole worn patch, not just the visible hole, so the surrounding fabric is supported too.

Crotch repair on jeans starts from S$30.80. The single most useful thing you can do is bring them in early. When you first notice the denim going thin or shiny between the legs, the repair is small and very durable. Once a hole has spread across the seams, there is more to rebuild.

The same repair applies to chinos and trousers; our pants alterations page covers the wider range of trouser work.

Hem Fixes

Hems wear out because they drag on the ground and catch under shoes. There are three common jobs:

  • A hem that has come down. The stitching has broken but the fabric is fine. This is usually treated as a seam repair, from S$5.80.
  • A frayed hem. The folded edge has worn through. The jeans are usually shortened slightly to cut away the damage and turned up again, which is a standard hem at S$15.80 to S$18.80.
  • Shortening while keeping the original hem. The factory hem, with its worn-in fade and stitching, is removed and reattached at the new length, at S$26.80 to S$30.80. It takes a little longer but does not look obviously altered.

If the jeans drag because they are simply too long, shortening them is also the repair that stops the hem fraying again. Our guide to how pants should fit explains how to choose the right length and break.

Zips, Buttons and Belt Loops

Not every jeans repair is about the denim. A broken fly zip, a missing button or a belt loop torn off at the waistband are all routine fixes. Our zip repair and replacement guide explains when a zip needs a new slider and when it needs replacing entirely.

When a Pair Is Not Worth Saving

We will tell you honestly when a repair is not a good use of your money:

  • The denim is failing everywhere. If the fabric has worn thin across the seat, the thighs and the knees, a repair in one place moves the problem to the next weak spot.
  • The fabric has perished. Some stretch denim loses its elasticity with age and starts to break up. Patching it does not last.
  • The repair costs more than the jeans are worth to you. Usually that is not the case, because most denim repairs are inexpensive, but it is your call and we will give you the price first.

A pair that fits you well and is worn in the way you like is usually worth saving. Replacing it means starting the breaking-in all over again.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to repair a hole in jeans in Singapore?

At Stitch & Steam, repairs to holes, tears and burst seams start from S$5.80. Crotch repair on jeans starts from S$30.80, because the seams meet at that point and the worn area usually needs reinforcing as well as closing. Larger patches and heavily worn areas are priced after we have seen the jeans, and the price is confirmed in person before any work begins.

Can a crotch blowout in jeans be repaired?

Usually, yes. A split along the seam can be re-sewn and reinforced. When the denim itself has worn thin around the crotch, a piece of denim is placed behind the area and stitched densely through both layers so the wear is supported, not just closed. The earlier you bring it in, the smaller the repair: a thin patch is far easier to reinforce than a hole that has already spread.

Can jeans be patched so the repair does not show?

A repair can be made discreet, but an honest tailor will not promise it disappears completely. Patching from the inside with denim close in colour and weight, then stitching in thread matched to the jeans, keeps the repair low-key. Faded or distressed denim is harder to match exactly, so we will tell you at the assessment how visible the result is likely to be.

How much does it cost to hem jeans in Singapore?

Standard jeans hemming at Stitch & Steam is S$15.80 to S$18.80. Keeping the original factory hem, so the worn-in edge and stitching stay intact, is S$26.80 to S$30.80. A hem that has simply come unstitched is usually treated as a seam repair, from S$5.80, confirmed when we see the jeans.

How long does jeans repair take?

Standard turnaround is around two weeks from your appointment. If you need the jeans back sooner, express alterations are available at 1.5x within 5 working days, 2x within 3 days, or 2.5x within 24 hours, subject to an available slot. Message us first to confirm.
